On a schedule, a boss spawns with a single health pool shared by everyone who fights it. You face it in a standard encounter; win or lose, the damage you deal comes off the pool while the boss is still alive and its window is still open, and that damage counts on the contribution board. A fight that settles after the boss has fallen, or after its window has closed, still credits any damage you dealt on the board - the pool is finished by then and takes nothing further. A fight that dealt no damage does not appear on the board. A fight a balance update has retired mid-encounter has its numbers declared void, so it moves neither the pool nor the board.
A dedicated page shows the countdown, the health bar, and a contribution board with the top performers and each faction's total. When the pool reaches zero, the kill is credited.
